Jesus Koemmt - Solo Cantata for the 3rd Day of Christmas [St John's Day]

Genre : Cantata
Comment : Susser Trost, mein Jesus kömmt (Sweet
comfort, my Jesus comes) / / Cantata 151 / / Christmas Tuesday / Epistle:
Hebrew i. 1-14 (Christ is preferred above the angels) or / Ecclesiastes xv.
1-8 (Wisdom embraces those that fear God) / Gospel: John i. 1-14 (In the
beginning was the word) or / John xxi. 15-24 (Jesus commands Peter to feed his
lambs) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ / / It's a great shame that no
flute concerti have come down to us from Bach's hand. Surely he must have
written them, given the quality of flute players that he had available to him.
Still, the opening soprano aria of this cantata is something of a consolation
prize for us flutists. It's a beautiful lilting piece in 12/8 time which
features the oboe d'amore as well as the flute. This is one of those pieces that
could quite happily be extracted from it's context and presented as an
independent concert aria. Perhaps that way it would get to be known as well as
it deserves rather than lying in relative obscurity. The rest of the cantata is
rather overshadowed by the opening movement and, indeed, there's only one other
aria (for alto) sandwiched between two recitatives. It's a pleasant piece with
the oboe d'amore more prominently featured. The cantata ends with a
straightforward chorale setting, the flute delightfully doubling the soprano
line.

Christmas Day
Composer : Johann Sebastian Bach
Conductor : Pieter Jan Leusink
Genre : Cantata
Comment : Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn (Walk in
the way of faith) / / Cantata 152 / / Sunday after Christmas / Epistle:
Galatians iv. 1-7 (Christ is sent to redeem those under the law) / Gospel: Luke
ii. 33-40 (Christ is born for the redemption of Israel) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS:
/ Rating: 1 / / Written early in Bach's career at Weimar, the solo cantata BWV
152 starts with a most attractive concerto. There's four bars of rather stately
introduction in common time followed by a permutation fugue that skips along in
3/8. The subject (which you may wish to compare with that from BWV 536) is
introduced by the recorder and developed by the oboe, viola d'amore (an
instrument that has sympathetically resonating strings beneath the fingerboard)
and the viola da gamba. The bass aria that follows has one of those wonderfully
plaintive oboe lines, at which Bach so excelled, weaving in and out of the
vocalist's line. The recitative has a nice leap down and up for the soloist at
the words zum fall und Auferstehen! The soprano aria has a beautiful and elegant
accompaniment from the recorder and viola d'amore and requires a singer of pure
voice and even tone to do justice to the long held notes. After a recitative,
the cantata is rounded off by a fine bass/soprano dialogue where the soul
enquires of Jesus how to obtain salvation. The recorder and oboe play most
effectively in unison in this movement.

Comment : Schau, lieber Gott, wie meine Feind
(See, dear God, the many enemies) / / Cantata 153 / / Sunday after the

Titus iii. 4-7 (Justified by grace, we are the heirs of eternal life) /
Gospel: Matthew ii. 13-15 (The flight into Egypt) or / Matthew iii. 13-17
(Jesus baptised by John) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 3+ / / Unusually,
this cantata starts with a simple chorale setting rather than a more elaborate
chorus and throughout its relatively short span, there are three chorale
settings and three straightforward recitatives. It has been suggested that given
the season, Bach's choirs would have had a lot of material to learn recently and
thus he deliberately wrote a cantata like this to ease his chorister's lives. /
/ Unfortunately, it shows. The remainder of the cantata is made up of three
arias which themselves are really nothing special. The first is just plain dull
and the second is energetic and frenetic but not especially inspired (and may be
a parody of a lost secular cantata movement). However, the third aria (for alto)
sounds like a failed attempt at writing a great tune, which at least succeeds in
being rather charming.

Comment : Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren (My
dearest Jesus is lost) / / Cantata 154 / / First Sunday after Epiphany /
Epistle: Romans xii. 1-6 (We are at one with Christ) / Gospel: Luke ii. 41-52
(Jesus in the temple) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ / / This short but
impressive cantata starts with an impassioned tenor aria in which the soul
bemoans the loss of Jesus. According to Robertson, you may wish to listen
carefully for a pre-echo of the sword motif from Wagner's Ring hidden between
the final sentences of this aria! A recitative leads into a straightforward
chorale harmonisation which itself leads to the gem of this cantata: The alto
aria Jesus, let me find Thee. This gentle and beautiful aria (in which,
unusually, the harpsichord doubles the strings, replacing the continuo) is well
worth going a long way to hear. Arioso leads into recitative and we arrive at
the final aria which is a duet for alto and tenor. This itself is very
attractive, if not quite up to the standard of the preceding alto aria. The
cantata closes with an attractive, if straightforward, chorale harmonisation.

God, how long, ah how long?) / / Cantata 155 / / Second Sunday after Trinity /
Epistle: Romans xii. 6-16 (Love and other duties are required of us) / Gospel:
John ii. 1-11 (Christ turns water into wine) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating:
2+ / / A rather gloomy soprano recitative opens this cantata in which the theme
is a common one: The redemption from a desperate life to be had through Christ.
So the pattern is set: Desperation followed by resignation to be replaced by
aspiration! The following alto aria provides the greatest interest in this
cantata: A fine duet between alto and tenor accompanied by a solo bassoon line
that may remind you of Philip Glass. Hypnotic and wide ranging, this must be a
piece that bassoonists must love and fear. Following the central recitative,
there is an aria for soprano that is introduced by an agitated and attractive
violin accompaniment. However, after a promising start the vocal melody is,
perhaps, a little less interesting that the accompaniment. This short cantata is
drawn to a close with a straightforward chorale setting.
